Split Panes

Split panes let you view multiple content tabs simultaneously within a single Repo tab. You can have issues open next to code, or a terminal beside your branches view.

Creating Splits

There are two ways to create split panes:

Drag-to-Split

Drag any content tab toward the edge of a pane. Drop zones appear as visual overlays:

  • Left edge — split and place the tab on the left
  • Right edge — split and place the tab on the right
  • Top edge — split and place the tab above
  • Bottom edge — split and place the tab below
  • Center — move the tab into this pane without splitting

Layout Presets

Apply a pre-designed layout with a keyboard shortcut. See Layouts for the full list.

How Panes Work

  • Each pane has its own top and bottom tab bars
  • Only one tab is active per pane
  • The active pane shows an accent-colored highlight
  • Inactive panes show a subtle border

Tab Placement Rules

When a new tab opens, Glint places it intelligently:

  • Singleton tabs (File Browser, Branches, etc.) go to the top-left pane
  • Detail tabs opened from a singleton go to an adjacent pane (right or below)
  • Detail tabs opened from another detail tab navigate in-place with history

Empty Panes

If all tabs are removed from a pane, it shows a placeholder message: “Select an item to open it here.” The pane is available for new tabs dropped or opened into it.

Pane Management

Right-click the pane background or use the pane header menu for options:

  • Split Right / Down / Left / Up
  • Close Pane
  • Maximize / Minimize

Persistence

Your split pane layout is saved and fully restored when you restart Glint — including pane sizes, arrangement, and which tabs are in which pane.
